My research engages cognitive neuroscience with social and historical studies of neuroscience within the framework of Critical Neuroscience. I am currently investigating the emergence of neurobiological models of adolescent behaviour. The project pays particular attention to the ways in which decision-making and social cognition enter into research questions and experimental paradigms and loop back into legal, educational, clinical and popular discourses. I am also interested in the development of the field of cultural neuroscience.

Research Area Philosophy of mind, philosophical problems of personal identity
My research projects focus on the philosophical problem of personal identity over time construed from the first-person perspective. I am particularly interested in the question of how different concepts of identity (i.e. biographical identity and numerical identity) relate to each other. This question is closely connected to the issue of self-consciousness as well as to empirical findings on the autobiographical memory.

My neuroimaging research to date has comprised of three distinct approaches. The first identifies the anatomical basis of training induced changes of neuronal systems in healthy adults. The second investigates longitudinal plasticity changes and identifies negative behavioural consequences or even development of clinical symptoms resulting from “maladaptive” plasticity. The third looks for patterns of anatomical connectivity and explores differences in cortico-subcortical projections topography and strength in health and disease.

My current research focuses on autonomy. I am considering questions such as whether subservience necessarily diminishes autonomy or what it is to be autonomous in one’s beliefs. In addition, I am also working on the nature of affective states (emotions, desire, or pleasure).

My research project focuses on mathematical models of dynamic perception and action, using a mixture of dynamic systems theory and Bayesian inference Using this approach, I pursue mainly two goals: (i) to model and predict observed neuronal dynamics, e.g. magneto- and electroencephalography (M/EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as measured in systems neuroscience experiments; (ii) to identify the computational principles used by the brain to implement artificial perception and action (including decision making) in adaptive agents.

Neural mechanisms of human communication.
Function Group leader
Research Area Neural mechanisms of human communication.
Our research question is: How does the human brain accomplish fast and robust communication? Currently, our work focuses on three aspects of auditory and face-to-face communication: i. Speech recognition ii. Person recognition iii. Interaction of auditory and visual modalities during face-to-face communication. We perform experiments involving several methods of systems neuroscience (functional MRI, structural MRI, EEG, MEG, TMS) and different subject groups, i.e. healthy controls, as well as people with selective developmental or acquired deficits (phonagnosia, prosopagnosia, specific language impairment). We additionally collaborate with theoretical neuroscientists to motivate computational models of human communication.

My main interest is on neuroplasticity in the somatosensory system due to learning, non-invasive brain stimulation, and peripheral stimulation. Furthermore, I am investigating tactile decision making and reward-perception interaction. To approach theses topics I am combining brain imaging (e.g., functional and structural MRI, intrinsic oscillations) with psychophysics and genetics.

Function Group leader
Research Area Analysis of complex electrophysiological and hemodynamic signals
The ‘Synchrony and Oscillations / EEG-fMRI Group’ aims at analysing complex electrophysiological and hemodynamic signals from multiple brain areas, their dynamics and interactions and their relation to mental operations. The philosophy of the group is to link theoretical and empirical neuroscience by relating computational model predictions to multimodal experimental data.

Research Area Ontology and epistemology of mental phenomena
I am working on philosophical questions concerning the ontology and epistemology of mental phenomena. My research focuses in particular on belief and belief-related states. Typical questions in this area are: what does it mean to believe something, how do we know our beliefs, under which circumstances is it correct to believe something?

The focus of my research is the neural implementation of volition and cognitive control and inter-individual variation thereof. In particular, I am interested in (i) the dissociability of different control processes in the prefrontal cortex (e.g. in dual tasking, task switching, etc...) (ii) the quantification of willpower, (iii) the role of fronto-striatal interactions in cognitive flexibility and (iv) dopaminergic modulations of cognitive control (genetic associations, effects of pharmacological interventions).

My main research interests include the neural mechanisms of conscious and unconscious visual perception and the interactions of emotion and motivation with visual perception. Research techniques used in my laboratory comprise functional and structural MRI (including functional connectivity and multi-voxel pattern analysis), EEG, visual psychophysics and eyetracking. Due to my clinical background in psychiatry and cognitive neurology, I am particularly interested in alterations of perceptual processes in mental diseases such as schizophrenia and affective disorders (e.g., depression).

My present research project is on necessary and sufficient conditions of self-consciousness (SC). I am particularly interested in the role of other beings with self-consciousness concerning the development of SC, as well as in the question what insights we can gain from an examination of psychopathological syndromes for a better understanding of SC. Together with Paula Droege I organize an interdisciplinary group called ‘Brains with Minds’, which is open to new students. Additionally, I am prepared to discuss Phd-projects during my office hours.
