Doctoral positions 2018

Research Training Group (RTG) 2386 “Extrospection. External access to higher cognitive processes”

Salaried doctoral positions for the period 2018–2021 (Ref. No: DR/091/18)

What is on offer?

The Research Training Group 2386 (RTG 2386) “Extrospection” advertises salaried university positions (TV-L E13 at 65%) for 2018, to start on 1 October 2018. Each position will be funded for three years (36 months).

During the RTG’s first funding period 2018–2023, with three different deadlines in 2018, 2019 and 2020, we will select three cohorts of doctoral researchers to start in October 2018 (till 2021), October 2019 (till 2022), and October 2020 (till 2023) respectively.

How much will I earn?

Salaries are a highly individual matter, and we can only give you a rough estimate based on the salary levels of the public sector in Berlin in 2018. TV-L Berlin E13 at 65% for a single person without children should come to approx. €2,350 gross per month (i.e., the basic pay before the deduction of income tax and insurances), or €1,600 net per month (i.e., the sum paid out to you).

Terms, conditions, and duties

Salaried university position holders benefit from both employers' and employees' statutory monthly contributions to the national income tax, social security, unemployment insurance, pension schemes, and health insurance. Statutory employee rights such as holiday entitlements apply, but must be applied for, agreed to and recorded. (Cf. the situation of scholarship / stipend holders - see Funding).

Doctoral candidates must partake in the research, education, and training program of RTG 2386 and agree to submit progress reports and present their research before their peers and faculty at agreed times. In addition to their employment contracts, they will also sign a supervision agreement with their supervisors, endorsed by the speaker of the Research Training Group. These positions do not entail teaching obligations.

How do I apply?

Please go to webpage Research topics (internal link). Numbered 1–10, we have listed the titles of the 10 research topics available. Each topic has a separate page. On each page we list the specific project description, the specific requirements that applicants for that particular topic need to fulfil, and how to apply for a research position within that topic.

Deadline 2018

The application period ends on 19 July 2018 11:59:59 a.m. CEST.

Doctoral project proposal

The most important part of your application will be your 5-page proposal for an interdisciplinary doctoral project devoted to the problem of extrospection.

More than one application?

Theoretically, you can apply for more than one research topic, but in that case you will have to hand in a distinct project proposal for each of the topics and meet each topic's specific requirements.

Letter of motivation

In your letter of motivation (required document), you should explain both your interest in the specific topic you are applying for and your motivation for wishing to conduct your doctoral research in a structured and interdisciplinary doctoral program.

Admissions committee

All decisions on positions in the RTG will be taken by the RTG’s admissions committee.
