Career conditions for junior scientists: Accompanying research (three-year doctoral scholarship)
Research into the career conditions and career development of junior scientists increasingly is becoming the focus of funding institutions. In 2013 the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) started to finance research projects, in which different aspects of the career development of junior scientists are being researched (www.bmbf.de/de/research-zum-wissenschaftlichen-nachwuchs-571.html). M&B has already been interviewed in this connection as part of an ongoing study conducted by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies.
In cooperation with Humboldt-Universität Department of Psychology’s Work and Organizational Psychology section (Professor Dr. Matthias Ziegler), we would therefore like to fund a doctoral thesis examining career conditions for junior scientists. This accompanying research will relate directly to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the steps proposed by M&B, and it may entail quantitative surveys regarding the measures taken, e.g., to support the transition of MA students, the transition of women from doctoral to postdoctoral studies, and successful and unsuccessful applications for the M&B doctoral program.
The Institute for Psychology of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Berlin School of Mind and Brain are thus happy to announce the availability of a three-year scholarship for a doctoral project to be worked on under the supervision of Professor Dr. Matthias Ziegler.
The scholarship will be funded by Einstein Foundation Berlin.

THE PROJECT
The stipend holder will work on a project aiming at an evaluation of the Berlin School of Mind and Brain's master and doctoral programs. A desired part of the project would be an evaluation of the selection procedures and various measures employed by the graduate school to identify and support the best candidates. A mixed-methods approach combining, e.g., qualitative interviews and quantitative approaches to evaluation is expected. Likewise, the project might involve online surveys of program students, alumni and faculty. Specifics will be determined once the project starts.
